Hello! My high school experience with English classes and writing were positive for the most part.  I enjoy reading and writing so I didn't mind when papers were assigned. I really did not enjoy reading Frankenstein, Great Expectations or The Odyssey.  Some of my favorites, however, were Romeo and Juliet, The Color Purple and To Kill a Mockingbird. We learned a lot about the different kinds of papers you can write and how to format them my sophomore year. I did not like that course because my writing felt very structured and black and white which is not my style.  The english class I took junior year was focused on synthesis, rhetorical analysis, and argumentative essays which was pretty dry. I was very interested in my journalism class during my senior year of high school. I learned about all different media forms and persuasive techniques. I wish I learned more about poetry in high school though.  I also would have like to read more of the classics.
I would expect this class to have both reading and writing. I am excited to read more books and delve deeper into them by analyzing and writing about different topics. When we read books in high school, I liked when we would have discussions about what certain symbols meant because it was intriguing to hear everyone's different opinions. I hope this class will do something similar. One thing I enjoyed about high school writing was that when I would turn in a paper I had the opportunity to revise it once I got it back using the teachers annotations. I am a little worried about not having that in college. However, I plan to use University Writing Services. I look forward to the rest of this year with all of you! -Meghan Loftus

  1. I too can also attest to the dry writing that occurred in our Sophomore and Junior year of high school. Structure is very important and without one can hardly format or construct an essay. However, my senior year of high school, we took a course called "Senior Writing Seminar" and within it we learned different creative technique and concrete techniques to make our writing sound solid and cohesive but entertaining and effective.

  3. Why did you like those books so much? I can relate to feeling like the rigid structures of argumentative essays limit creativity. However, I have found that it is a good idea to pinpoint certain techniques in works that I like. With those strategies in mind, it is much easier to enjoy writing structured papers.
