Highschool Experience

Howdy! Throughout my high school career, English classes have been challenging but entertaining as well. My teachers had passion behind what they taught and it rubbed off on me. I’ve never been a huge reader, but I was always intrigued in what we read in class. Essays never were a huge challenge. I learned that if I kept communication with my teacher I would be able to mold my essays to A+ papers. I always enjoyed writing essays over any other school work. Essays, to me, are like a puzzle. You’re given a topic and information, and it’s up to you to fit all the pieces together. Books I read over my high school career were as follows: Power of One, Ender’s Game, The Great Gatsby, The Kite Runner, and Oedipus Rex. I can’t remember all of the titles I read, but these stories stuck with me the most. What I mostly learned in English class was how to analyze a book and how to tie certain factors together. Now, every time I read a story, I’m searching for details that I could tie in to an essay. My school back in Dallas has been known in the area as one of the best English programs; thus, I believe what I learned their will help me grow my writing ability in college. What I hated about English classes the most was either vocab quizzes or grammar. I never understood vocab quizzes because now in age, if you don’t know a word, you look it up. What I expect from our SLU class is a free atmosphere, where we can expect help from our teacher. I want to be able to master writing essays, and this class seems to put me in the right direction. My only concern is just starting off right. I want to be prepared and I think after receiving the syllabus, I will relax a tad. Happy to start my class with y’all. - Jack Hazzard

  1. I love that you say essays are like a puzzle. It makes so much sense. I think writing is the most creative subject (other than art) that incorporates learning and creativity. You have the freedom to say whatever you want and it's up to you to choose how you want to say it.

  2. I am a bit jealous that you got to study such interesting books in high school. At my school, we read very random books that I didn't enjoy writing papers about. And I agree with your comments about vocabulary quizzes and expecting a free atmosphere.
