GMO's

Hanson, Erb, Myers, Lyles

For GMO’s
  • with the use of them, farmers can better be stewards of the environment and grow more crops with less land
  • they are able to keep and make more food, more people can be fed and food prices go down
  • with the population increasing, they help increase crop production using less resources needed to tend to the population
  • foods that re made with gmos have a better taste texture and nutritional value
  • the gmo crop are made to be more resistant to weeds, pests, and disease, especially in corn
  • less pesticides need to be used, therefore less harmful chemicals are put into the environment
  • they are already in 80% of the food we are eating
  • they allow farmers to be able to make crops on less land which is helpful to the increasing population
Counterargument:
  • how about animals?
-diseases decrease in animals when the are genetically modifies
  • no, they don’t solve the food crisis, but gross help

Against GMO’s
  • people are not fine from gmos, people get several diseases and have to resort to eating certain products because gross harmed them
  • laws are being made against gmos, the Kevin Law
  • children are getting sick from them because they harvest allergies and cannot process certain foods
  • farmers themselves are spending more money buying what it takes to create these gmos
  • farming technology is not up to par yet
  • gmos and non gmos do not coexists well
  • farmers have actually increased their use of pesticides
  • there is still a global food crisis even with the gmos
  • gmos are toxic and are infecting the air and soil
  • lower levels of biodiversity
  • gmos are playing God, other countries look down at the US for altering nature
Counterargument:

  • a lot of people don’t know anything about it and there are informational videos and documents that can inform people of this issue
  • they have’t been that successful in genetically modifying foods and animals
  • it is not much of an improvement, gmo science is failing in many instances
  • farmers are not making enough money because of how much it costs to make modified crops
  • we need more advanced technology that is not so harmful

The Dilemma

Flip:
·             Most people choose this option because it is the “better thing to do”
·             Good of many comes first
·             Reduce the number deaths if you can
·             Saving more lives is the most important thing
·             Push the fat man off because he is saving more people
·             Healthy patient can be killed to save the other people because one death is better than 5

Don't Flip:
·             Natural selection- sitting on train tracks playing cards and eating lunch. They don’t receive sensory input
·             The weaker species will die out because they can’t survive (don’t understand to move off of train tracks)
·             Maybe they want to die- there for a reason
·             Don’t push the fat man off, push a bunch of skinny people off- he isn’t unintelligent like the people just sitting there
·             Don’t kill the healthy patient, the other people are closer to death

o   Unethical to kill just the one man

The Bizarre, misguided campaign to get rid of single sex classrooms

Same sex classroom debate-

Agree:

  • This allows people who are less well off to receive a specialized single sex education.
  • Single sex schools allow each student taylor made education for each individual.
  • These schools can specialize in math and science for girls to help encourage them into these fields because of the gender gap.
  • Some parents and children want same sex schools because they believe they learn better there, therefore they should have the option available to them.
  • Providing financial needs for students for economically disadvantaged.

Disagree:

  • Same sex are no different than racially segregated classrooms, just because certain boys need time management classes does mean they all need that. Not everyone is the same just because of their sex.
  • People should get an education for the content of their character not based of their sex.

  • Same sex schools aren't always finically available to all students which can hinders them from going there.
  • ACLU launched a campaign that said teach kids not stereotypes, teaching students things such as, organization and self control just perpetuates the stereotypes that men aren't organized or that they can't control themselves. For girls it forces them to "dissect the frog" that reenforces the stereotype that girls don't want to participate in science.
  • Enhances stereotypes based on sex. ACLU conducted a study that proves this.
