A Soft Society

The world used to be such an untamed wild and unruly place, its name only held in hushed tones within the deepest crevices of societies; but with a growingly sensitive society in which views that are offensive are no longer allowed, the harsh realities that the real world used to provide are slowly being suffocated by the constraints of the law. I agree with the authors of this article in that this overwhelming sensitivity has started to ruin society, breaking the very backbone of human beings who are driven to be strong by nature.
The article argues that students are becoming to sensitized to the real world and I agree because of the increase in words that are considered to be politically correct (8). I find that it is "creating a culture in which everyone must think twice before speaking up" this overwhelming concern for what we do and what we say is the root of the reason for why this era of technological enhancement is destroying the soul and passion that humans add to life. At the same time I believe that it is destroying the soul of society, I also believe that it is causing a huge spike in the frequency of mental illness. (25).  “Rates of mental illness in young adults have been rising” and though these may be unrelated trends it also coincides with our increasingly sensitive society. People need to be exposed to the world to really understand their fear: “Social media makes it extraordinarily easy to…express solidarity” it allows anyone to voice their opinions without the thought of actually human confrontation. It’s created a society filled with passive aggressive hate. If the article is right about this increasingly pampered generation, then major consequences follow for anything in the future as this generation grows up (99). Like anything it is impossible to predict the implications of such a pandemic in society but ultimately what’s at stake here is the well being of all future generations to come (99). The increasing amount of microaggressions meaning a “subtle, often unconscious racist affronts” is the reason for all of this hassle, freedom of speech is a topic long argued over in society, and one stipulation of freedom of speech is the right for someone to avert their ears. As much as people blame the mouth for these microaggressions, than the ears play half the role. People need to not only learn to control themselves but also realize not everyone has the same views and that it’s a basic human right to be allowed to have these views. There will be disagreements yes but at the end of the day people are entitled to their opinion and only the ignorant ones make personal attacks on said people because of their views, a view everyone is entitled to have,

  1. I agree that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and that only ignorant people actually use their opinions to attack others. Also, the beginning of your post was very intense and introduced your opinion well.

  2. I'm interested as to know your opinion of microaggressions after reading your post. Do you think that microaggressions are becoming more and more common parallel to the recent trends or do you think the problem is just now being surfaced?
