The first
and foremost way that Fight Club helps me write papers is that I have to
consider both sides of the argument – or at least I think it helps me do that.
I think I do still struggle with bringing up points from the opposing argument
and forming a rebuttal for that opposing point. Fight Club helps me feel more
comfortable in arguing with classmates, albeit Fight Club has not consisted of
any particularly difficult/controversial subjects yet.
What is
still hard for me about Fight Club is speaking in front of others, especially
with the new entire-class format of Fight Club. I actually preferred Fight Club
between just 3-4 people, as I feel more comfortable disagreeing with classmates
in that format and it is also easier for me to make good points because I am
not nervous about being in front of a classroom of people.
In some
ways, I do think verbal arguments can help points hit home in a better way than
if they were written. For example, in the case of a personal anecdote, I think
they are better told in person, as you can understand the person’s emotions
when telling it, and having someone tell a personal story is more interesting
than reading the story and knowing nothing about the person/people involved.
Additionally, in any kind of verbal argument, I think it is better to
understand the way a person feels, as you can hear their tone regarding certain
subjects that isn’t always easily translated in written word.
I agree that it is hard to speak in front of the whole class especially when only a few people are doing it at once. Great reflection. I had a lot of similar thoughts.
