Fight Club 10/15

Pro - Patrick Noble
Con - Mason Galvan
Moderator - Jessica Valdes
Scribe - Laura Erb

Pro
-artists use snippets of songs with their own style to make it original
-there's no new material if everything is taken from something else
-we take for granted that there's already ideas that we can build off of, so nothing is necessarily on our own
-if you give credit from where you got ideas, it's not original, but not stealing
-we confuse ourselves from where things actually originated in the first place

Con
-someone can incorporate something else, but adding something of your own, it's original
-at some point, somebody had to have an original thought for people to build off of
-there was once something original about everything, there was something that sparked everyone else's ideas
-as long as something is significantly different from something else, it's original
-ideas can converge - you didn't take something else's idea but you brought elements together to create something
-if you go find a brick building and break it down, you can use the bricks to make a new building, but you wouldn't say it's the same building

What do you think about taking something you love and building on it? Admiration or copying?
P: It's more copying, than making something new.

Does changing the tone of something make it different?
P: You're still using the original idea.
M: If the point of something is to convey something, such as a song, then different versions are different because they convey different things.

On taking perspectives from other things
M: The way you put it together is what makes it original.

Do we confuse ourselves about where things come from?
M: Everything is already a hodge-podge anyway, it's hard to know what's original. But if you can't trace every element of something, then there's something different about it.

Does copying something and making it a trend (more popular) good?
P: It could be good or bad.
M: Trends start and die because people realize they aren't original. People want things that are original.

When you want to create something, you browse for ideas, so when you create, nothing is original.
M: As long as you do something with the idea you create, if it's not identical, it can be original.

The best people echo each other's thoughts.
P: To be original, you could only listen to your own music.

Is everything a remix?
P: Yes, for example the 4 chord song.
M: We haven't written down every single combination of every musical note yet, so probably not.
