This is Glen Ellyn's current flag:
A flag describes a city to it's people and it's people to the world at large. So this is what I am proposing:
This flag is an improvement because it follows the rules discussed in the TED Talk:
1.) Keep it simple - My flag is very simple. Using two basic colors (green and blue) and two basic shapes (rectangle stripe and circle) to make it a memorable flag.
2.) Use meaningful symbolism-A blue circle to symbolize the lake, a green stripe flowing from one end of the flag to the other behind the circle to show how the people of Glen Ellyn always carry a piece of their hometown with them.
3.) Use 2-3 basic colors- Only colors I used were green and blue. While supplies didn't allow, these would be the generic green and blue.
4.) No lettering/seals- I excluded Glen Ellyn and the year it was founded from my flag so that it remains appealing when viewed from a greater distance.
5.) Be distinctive. - My flag is distinctive and memorable because of it's simplicity and deeper meaning.
My flag is appealing to the eye and pleasing to the people of the city, whom are very classically oriented. The simplicity will make people want to stand behind it. The city itself is very simple, so you might expect something like this to take off in a town of basic teenagers. I could totally see boys proudly flying this at the football games. Sadly, I could even see moms hanging it from the front porch- it's that kind of place. Regardless, I think this is a flag Glen Ellyn-ites would be proud of and that is what matters most.
Ms. Loftus, you employed the main principles of the TED Talk in your flag re-design, but I believe you made a significant oversight. In making your flag very simple, it does not stand out to viewers. One of a flag's main purposes is to create a symbol for which people can be very proud. Because of its simplistic design, the population will really need to buy into the symbols behind it to make it a successful design. I am not sure that will be accomplished as effectively as you think.
ReplyDeleteYou changed it a lot, but a child would be able to draw, you kept simple colors. So you were on the write track. I agree with Matt, it should stand out a bit more.
