Oh yes, people argue.

Oh yes, people argue. People argue all the time. I can name countless times a day that I argue with people, and witness people arguing. People argue about whether or not walking to Fusz for dinner is worth it when Gries is so close. Living on an all-girls floor, there is the occasional argument about boys and who should be able to borrow which clothes from which person. People argue about bigger, more important things too. Religion and politics seem to be pretty good starters for arguments that then lead to heated arguments. I think that these arguments do accomplish something. Every person has their own views, and many times they differ than the views of others. Everyone has the right to their own opinion, and the right to express that opinion. I think that these arguments can be incredibly helpful. There is a lot to be learned through arguments on both ends, but only when done in a respectful manner. Arguments are not near as helpful when done in an aggressive and attacking manner.

Argumentation is encouraged in my classes. Theology discussion classes definitely encourage argumentation. Dr. Miller expects people to express their opinions and defend these opinions. He encourages different opinions to be expressed and go head to head.  We also have FIGHT CLUB in this class, so arguing is very encouraged. Like I said, there is a lot to learn from these arguments when they are done in a healthy way.Teachers generally respond well to these arguments and know how to deal with them and diffuse them when necessary. The teachers can see the benefits that will come with students expressing their opinions in a respectful manner.

  1. Do you usually see people just acknowledging that others think differently after heated arguments, or do they actually try to understand opposing point s of view in order to enhance their own.

  3. Hey Maddie, I thought your post raised some good points! I encourage you argue about things you really care about however. It's important to be passionate about things. I enjoyed your insight on politics too. It certainly is a frequent topic for arguments.
