The New Romantics in the Computer Age Debate (9.15.15.)

Pros:

  • The "new romanticism" in the workplace lacks incentive.
  • Machines aren't heroes.
    • Humans have compassion and serious thought
  • Computers can do most things.
    • People should be more creative since computers can do the more technical things.
  • A lot of the jobs humans still have involve working with humans.
    • This requires empathy, something that technology lacks.
  • There are activities driven by our deepest nature.
    • Passion, positions of authority, accountability, team members, and caregivers
  • Wide repetoire of emotions through reflection, literature, and capacity for intimacy, new romanticism can be built in the workplace.
    • There's certain things people only trust people to do
      • i.e. writing literature-- it's more personal with a human's emotions, rather a computer stringing together words.

Cons:

  • With parents being basic providers for education, we need to push for more technical tasks.
    • You can have creative skills without having a "romantic" education.
  • Computers specifically aid in the world of finance and law.
    • We need computers to advance in this world.
  • The employment rate is low for "romantic majors".
    • Not practical
  • There needs to be a necessity for areas of pragmatism to give way to the errors of idealism.
  • Not all humans have the ability to function in a group and have cognitive skills.
    • Human emotion can get in the way of advancement.
  • Humans have a limited amount of memory, whereas, computers can compute and memorize in seconds.
Moderator:
  • You don't need to be a romantic or a nontechnical major to have any of the empathic skills mentioned.
  • There are certain jobs that computers can do, but there are also jobs that humans should do.
    • i.e. It's okay for computers to be cashiers, but humans should be authors to books.
    • It doesn't need to be one or the other.
  • We live in a society where technology doesn't need to be just as important as human interaction but is still present.
  • Humans need to maintain current technology and design future advancements.
    • We aren't in a place where technology can be autonomous.
