Maddie - Against the computer age
Anna - For the computer age
Moderator Questions:
Have any of you had the experience of having your parents push you into a major that you did not want to do - how did you handle it? How might someone else handle it?
Is having computers do everything necessarily a bad thing?
- Answer:
- Want computers:
- Against computers:
- not enough time to answer this
What would happen if there is no empathy in the workplace, or wherever? Is it such a big deal?
- Answer:
- For empathy: important for jobs that computers can't do - that work with humans (psychologists) will become more important jobs then the jobs that computers can do
- Against empathy: It's inefficient - if we focus on feelings then we could sacrifice getting work done
- If you're worried about offending people in a business meeting for example then you won't get anything done, no progress
What happens to the people that aren't creative?
- Answer:
- the people that are the accounts will lose their job, they will be at a loss, these people are pushing for new wave romanticism
- these people would resist the changes of computers
Fight:
Against:
depends on parent about if you want someone to do something artsy in college or not
her parents are accountants so they want her to do something "smart" but if they were musicians or something
shortage of artists - doesn't see that we're living in unromantic period because art is still important to us in a society
people shouldn't stop trying to improve themselves because computers can't do anything - there would be no more progress if we stopped and let computers do anything
For:
with computers we become more efficient - less labor
can be more precise - with surgeries, less errors
humans can focus on other jobs so we don't have to focus on skills, like accounting, but can do art and stuff
Counterarguments:
For:
Parents won't enforce artsy as much as cognitive skills - it could make our culture different, but it's not a bad different if we focus on other things besides the norm
If computers taking over accounting, then people will go towards the artsy stuff - they will devote their time to creative things
Could always get rid of jobs associated with tasks - like filing - but not the research
Agree with romanticism coming into our culture more
Against:
People want to tend to go against the norm
Final Remarks:
Against - don't think there's a new wave of romantics coming, because there was never a decline - there are plenty of artists, musicians
For - most parents are discouraging artsy things, stereotypically, technology will continue to improve and will take over so those people will move to the more creative stuff, even if that isn't in their nature
