Should Everyone Go to College Argument

Pros:

  • Certain jobs don't require majors.
    • people need to do the jobs that don't require college degrees
    • There are jobs that have apprenticeships
  • You should choose practical majors if you want to be in college
    • make your money worth while
  • For some schools, the ROI is negative-- you don't get money back.
  • The cost
    • You'll be in debt for a long time (i.e. student loan debt is larger than credit card debt)
  • Opportunities cost
    • Being in the workforce for 4 years making money vs. losing money paying for college
  • Social benefits of being in the workforce
    • having coworkers, spending your money earned
  • In response that college students make more in the end:
    • There is a potential overwhelming debt if enrolled in college that may cause onset depression and stress
Cons:

  • Over a lifetime, people with a bachelors degree make more money than someone with just a high school diploma.
  • There's research by what people make by major. Even the least paying majors make more money than people with only high school degrees.
  • You can get social benefits
    • how to be independent and broadening your education as a whole
      • i.e. taking an English class even though your major isn't English
    • being exposed to more people
  • Will make more connections by going to college
    • easier to find jobs
  • Even by going to college and not receiving a degree still gives you a benefit than no college attendance at all
  • There's more financial aid for college than people realise
    • Schools give out a lot more money than can make college more affordable
