Bad Blood

After looking at the Bad blood music video, by Taylor Swift, and doing research on the song I realized Ryan Adams also has his own cover for the song. Though Ryan does not have a music video the tone of the song when Ryan Adams sings is much more mellow than Taylor Swift. Taylor takes a very aggressive and almost frightening approach when singing the song and in her music video. It is clear that when Taylor is singing the song she is angry and when Ryan is singing the song he is upset.
Both songs are equally as serious and emotional but in completely different ways. Taylor’s version of the song is more upbeat and energetic in relation to anger, which is a stronger emotion. Whereas Ryan’s version of the song was much more relaxed and somber which emphasizes his sadness. The variation of these two melodies demonstrates how artists show their emotions through their works. I also found it very interesting that the tones were completely different considering that the lyrics are exactly the same.
Apart from the emotional aspect, each artist differentiated their song with their own styles. When Ryan sings the song he uses wide rage of melodies and different notes in terms of sharps and flats. As for Taylor she used an upbeat tone the whole time. Towards the start of the song he drags out the lyrics when explaining the emotions. This emphasizes that he takes a more sorrow approach. At (0.48) he picks up the beat when he starts talking about darker and more serious emotions. When Taylor says the word bad blood specifically she sings it louder and clearly with more emotion. (0.48).
The fact that Taylor has Kendrick Lamar rapping in her version of the song definitely emphasizes the dark tone Taylor was trying to portray. When Kendrick is rapping he states, “I hate you” which is very powerful especially because rap tends to be more direct. Rap typically has a more serious tone and you would not hear it in a sorrowful song, which explains why Ryan would not have something like that in his song.

  1. I like how you brought up the fact that Kendrick Lamar was added to the song. Now and days, it seems that Pop stars are using Hip/Hop or Rap artist in their songs to make their song with more impact. Do you think if Ryan had a rap part in his song, would it change his whole point of the cover?
